Six ways to increase restoration business value

Six ways to increase restoration business value

Strong financials, documented processes and an independent team can make a restoration business more attractive to prospective buyers.

Selling a restoration business for top dollar requires preparation long before the company enters the market. HS Exit Advisors identified six factors that consistently contributed to higher business value after analyzing more than 300 successful transactions over nearly 20 years in the restoration industry.

Financial performance is the first consideration. Buyers closely examine accounting records, revenue, expenses and financial statements, making accuracy and consistency essential. Business owners should keep records current and resolve discrepancies as soon as they are identified. Growth potential also influences how buyers evaluate a company. Opportunities to enter new markets, introduce additional services or reach new customer segments can demonstrate that the business has room to expand and generate greater profits.

A company’s structure matters as well. A restoration business that depends heavily on its owner may appear difficult to operate after a sale. Delegating responsibilities, documenting roles and training employees to manage operations independently can create a more neutral structure that supports continuity.

Documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) and a defined sales plan further strengthen the business. SOPs help maintain consistent service and quality, while a sales plan shows how the company intends to attract and retain customers. Both should be reviewed regularly and updated as the business changes.

Customer reviews provide another measure of value by demonstrating the company’s reputation. Owners can support positive feedback by delivering strong service, requesting reviews from satisfied customers and responding professionally to both praise and criticism.

Finally, buyers value teams that can manage their responsibilities without constant supervision. Providing employees with training, decision-making authority and clear accountability can help create a self-managed workforce.

Together, these six value drivers can position a restoration business to attract stronger interest and potentially generate multiple offers.
