Labor Central is pushing back against one of the most persistent concerns surrounding artificial intelligence in roofing: the fear that technology will replace skilled tradespeople. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips® Karen Edwards sat down with Carlos Carballo of Labor Central, who made it clear that AI’s role is supportive, not substitutive.
Concerns that artificial intelligence will replace roofing jobs continue to surface, but Carlos said those fears are largely misplaced. While AI can outperform humans in data-heavy and repetitive tasks, roofing remains a physical trade rooted in experience and craftsmanship.
Industry conversations consistently point to the durability of skilled trades. While AI can streamline sales, scheduling and communication, it cannot perform hands-on installation work. Contractors still need trained workers on the roof to complete projects safely and correctly.
Where AI does deliver immediate value is in efficiency and error reduction. Carlos pointed to long-standing challenges in construction, including chronic budget overruns. He shared, “Eighty-five percent of the projects in construction go over budget.” AI-driven project management tools help contractors improve forecasting, scheduling and budgeting by identifying patterns and risks that are easy to miss in manual processes.
Those benefits extend beyond cost control into daily communication and documentation. AI tools that record meetings and generate summaries are helping teams stay aligned and reduce misunderstandings that can derail jobs. “Everyone has a note now on the phone and follows the outlined plan,” Carballo said, describing how shared documentation improves accountability across crews and managers.
AI is also already embedded in technologies many contractors use every day. Drones, for example, rely on artificial intelligence to automate measurements, assess damage and support estimating. Carlos noted, “The whole estimating process, using drones, all that is AI now.” These tools are becoming standard as contractors look for faster and more accurate ways to evaluate roofs.
Safety represents another critical area where AI is making an impact. Drawing on experience in healthcare and financial services, Carlos said predictive tools can identify hazards before accidents occur. AI-powered analysis of images and site conditions can flag structural concerns and potential risks earlier in the process. He noted, “To me, that's the biggest piece; it’s saving lives.”
