In this video, Greg Malarkey, Senior VP of Malarkey Roofing Products, explains the importance of granules. Granules are something that everyone sees when they look at a roof and according to Greg, they have four functions that they need to perform.
1 – UV Ray Protection. Asphalt ages because of UV rays from the sun. Granules help protect the asphalt from those harmful rays.
2 – Appearance. The average shingle manufactured by Malarkey Roofing Products has six different granule colors. By combining colors, they are able to generate a wide palette of color choices to complement any home.
3 – Work surface safety. When a roof is being installed it’s important that the granules stay on the shingle, so the roof surface isn’t dangerous to the contractor. At Malarkey, a great deal of attention is paid to granule adhesion as a safety aspect.
4 – Manufacturing. In the manufacturing process, granules are the separation between the machines and the asphalt product that allows the shingles to be made.
So, while granules are a small item, they do indeed make a very big impact on the life and appearance of the roof.
