The endless opportunities in roofing careers

The endless opportunities in roofing careers
February 22, 2025 at 12:00 p.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Learn how one woman went from a temporary position in marketing to leading a roofing service department!

One of the biggest issues the roofing industry continues to face is the ongoing labor shortage. While there are many factors contributing to this need, a big one is the outdated misconception that roofing is not a viable career path. That’s why Roofing Talent America and RoofersCoffeeShop® have come together to produce a podcast series called People Make Roofing to showcase what the real industry is like, complete with diverse opportunities, growth potential and the chance to leave a lasting impact. In a recent episode, Tammy Hall stopped by The Coffee Shops to share her experiences with Heidi J. Ellsworth and Luke McCormack.

Today, Tammy is the director of marketing and business development for CFS Roofing out of Fort Myers, Florida. But she wasn’t necessarily planning to be in the industry. She shared a bit about how she wound up roofing, “I actually was not originally inspired to pursue a career in roofing. It started when the owner of CFS Roofing, David Crowther and his wife invited me to dinner and David told me that he as starting this roofing company...I had a marketing consulting business that I was just kind of winding down and I was trying to decide what I wanted to do and he's like, ‘Well, would you mind coming in and maybe we can just talk?’” From there, he hired her to do marketing for what Tammy expected to be a few weeks. It’s now 11 years later and she’s still there.

And she has gained a lot of experience in that time, at one point she was even in charge of running CFS’s service department! Tammy explained, “I literally walked in with no experience, no idea what roofing service was, and I think that's a great testament to somebody like David, who had 45 years in the industry, to take someone right off the street and train them enough to be able to run a service department, work with the crews and build a team.” This ability to continually learn and grow is one of the reasons Tammy loves working in the roofing industry, “You don't have to have all of this wealth of knowledge, but you have to be willing to learn. You will grow to love the industry. Once you're in it, it's really hard to leave.”
