Technology isn’t the solution – people are

Technology isn’t the solution – people are
July 4, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

Your employees create the foundation of your business, so why aren’t they part of building solutions?

In roofing, operational challenges rarely come from one place. A reporting issue might look like a software problem. A production bottleneck might feel like a staffing issue. Data might be available but still not usable. And somewhere in the middle of it all, leaders are left trying to make smarter decisions with incomplete visibility. In the new podcast series, Operational Clarity, Heidi J. Ellsworth and Karen Edwards join Lynsey Hull to explore the intersection of people, process, data and technology, sharing strategies to eliminate friction, build scalable systems and make smarter decisions.

During the first episode, Lynsey makes it clear that operational clarity isn’t about buying the newest technology. It’s about understanding how your business actually works.

Built on solving complex problems

As CEO of Tyelus Consulting, Lynsey doesn’t describe his team as software developers, consultants or system integrators. Instead, he says, “We’re a group of strategic process architects.” Instead of pushing platforms or offering cookie-cutter solutions, Tyelus starts by listening. “We start by asking management what they’re looking for. What do you need? What are the metrics you’re looking for? What are you looking to gain out of this process?” Lynsey explains.

Then comes a question every business leader should ask more often: “It’s your Christmas list, right? If you could have anything you wanted, if you could dream as big as you want, what is it?” Lynsey continues. “Then we start at the bottom. We start at your workers because your workers are the ones who create that data. They’re the ones who make it happen.” He believes that when leadership imposes solutions without understanding how work actually gets done, the process breaks before it begins.

Creating systems around your people

One of the strongest takeaways is Lynsey’s perspective on AI, automation and the nonstop pressure companies feel to adopt new tools. His advice is to slow down: “You can’t put a roof up without a hammer, right? But the hammer is not going to put the roof on.” The industry is being bombarded with messages that if you’re not adopting AI now, you’re already falling behind. But Lynsey warns that technology introduced before an organization is ready can create fear, confusion and lower productivity.

He challenges leaders to build the foundation first. “If you jump into it before you’re ready, before your processes are ready, before your people are ready, people are going to get scared,” he explains. “Let them show you they’re doing better. Give them the tools to show you they’re doing better.” When you build processes around the people doing the work, they become part of the solution, not an obstacle to change.

Episode one of Operational Clarity sets the tone for what’s ahead: honest conversations about operational friction, scalable growth and how roofing companies can make smarter decisions without chasing every new technology trend. If your business is navigating software decisions, struggling with disconnected data or simply trying to build stronger systems around your people, this is a conversation worth following.

Listen to the full first episode, then follow along as Operational Clarity continues unpacking the people, processes, data and technology that keep our industry moving forward.
