What is STPE Technology?

MAY - ProdSvs - Soprema - What is STPE technology
May 13, 2018 at 6:33 a.m.

By SOPREMA.

Technology combines the best of silicone and urethane performance.

STPE, the hybrid product

STPE technology is a hybrid product of silicone and polyurethane technologies. By combining these chemistries, it brings together the most desirable features of each and creates a durable, high quality product. STPE technology is engineered not only to produce high performance products, but also to produce products that are safe for workers and the environment. Other common names for this chemistry include MS Polymer, SPUR, Polyether, STP and SMP.

Benefits of STPE Technology

As previously mentioned, these products are engineered for high performance and to be a safe and environmentally friendly solution with extremely low VOCs. STPE based products offer excellent cure speeds and perform well at low temperatures and under nearly any weather condition. If the project is tasked with extremely dry conditions, multiple rainy days or anything in between, STPE technology performs. These chemistries provide no possibility of outgassing and can even be applied under water for emergency repairs.

As for project considerations, STPE technology is perfect for projects that require flexibility in design. Typically, they do not require primers and offer a broad adhesion profile for many types of projects and are compatible with a wide range of substrates. Upon completion, STPE materials are more paintable than any silicone sealant available.

Compared to Silicones and Urethanes

When comparing STPE materials to silicones and urethanes, there are many qualities that stand out. STPE based technologies will typically exceed the elongation characteristics of silicones. They often have good adhesion to a wider range of materials than urethanes. They also offer better UV resistance than most urethanes. They are competitive in price with both urethanes and silicones.

By combining the best qualities of silicones and urethanes, STPE technology offers the best of both worlds. When looking for a product that offers design flexibility with fast cure speeds and low VOCs, these products are the perfect solution.
