Polymer technology strengthens modern shingles

Advanced asphalt technology, impact resistance and sustainability features are helping modern shingles deliver lasting roof performance.

Malarkey Roofing Products® shingles are designed to stand apart in the roofing industry by combining advanced asphalt technology, impact resistance and sustainability-focused manufacturing across the company’s Good-Better-Best product lineup. The product line gives contractors and homeowners multiple options depending on project goals, budget and long-term performance expectations. At the center of the system is Malarkey’s patented NEX® Polymer Modified (SBS Rubberized) Asphalt technology, which blends traditional asphalt with specialized rubber and plastic polymers to improve flexibility and durability.

According to the company, the SBS rubberized asphalt technology helps shingles better adapt to temperature fluctuations compared to conventional asphalt shingles. That flexibility is designed to reduce thermal cracking and dry-out, two common issues that can shorten the lifespan of standard roofing materials over time. The enhanced flexibility also helps shingles maintain long-term performance during severe weather exposure.

The technology additionally supports stronger granule adhesion. Better granule retention helps preserve the protective surface of the shingles, reducing exposure to ultraviolet rays and weathering while maintaining the roof’s appearance over time.

Impact resistance is another major focus within the product line. Malarkey offers shingles with both Class 3 and Class 4 impact resistance ratings, which are designed to help roofs better withstand hail and wind-driven debris. Those ratings may be especially important for contractors and homeowners operating in regions prone to severe storms.

Sustainability also plays a significant role in the design of the shingles. Malarkey incorporates upcycled rubber from used tires and recycled plastics into its products, helping divert waste from landfills while strengthening the asphalt core. In addition, the shingles include smog-reducing granules intended to help break down airborne pollutants.

Together, the combination of durability, weather resistance and environmentally conscious manufacturing reflects a broader shift in the roofing industry toward longer lasting and more sustainable roofing systems.
