Daylighting supports smarter metal building design

Daylighting supports smarter metal building design

Natural light, improved efficiency and easier installation are helping contractors bring more value to modern metal buildings.

On this episode of MetalTalk™, Karen Edwards spoke with Brian Gurley, director of commercial sales for North America at Velux®, about daylighting in modern metal buildings. As metal buildings continue to evolve, daylighting is becoming an increasingly important design consideration for contractors, building owners and architects. The approach uses natural light to support energy efficiency, occupant comfort and stronger connections between indoor and outdoor environments.

Brian said daylighting has a long history, but today’s systems are far different from older skylight products that would often raise concerns about water intrusion, condensation and durability. Modern materials, improved frame designs and better integration with roofing systems have helped address many of those issues. Brian noted, “The skylights of today are nowhere near the skylights of old.”

For contractors, daylighting can be especially valuable in both new construction and existing buildings. Brian stated that many older facilities are being repurposed for new uses, including schools, mixed-use properties and other commercial spaces. In those cases, daylighting strategies can be tailored to the building’s new function and the owner’s goals.

The conversation also focused on installation. Brian explained that Velux works with roofing and building manufacturers to design curb systems that match specific metal roof panel profiles. Brian shared, “We want to make sure that it is very easy to integrate into their roofing panels from a contractor standpoint and from a building design standpoint.” That helps contractors create watertight installations while minimizing disruption to the roof system.

Safety and durability remain central concerns. Brian said the company tests skylights for impact and static loads while also recommending accessory fall protection, such as external cages or safety screens, as an added redundancy. Brian shared, “We test the skylights to failure with impact and static loads and we provide that information to the contractors and building owners so that they know these skylights are strong, they're meant to last.”

Beyond performance, daylighting may help contractors differentiate their businesses. By offering systems that support more efficient and occupant-friendly buildings, contractors can bring an added value proposition to customers managing tight budgets, labor challenges and changing building needs.
