Benefits of a Class A fire rating

Benefits of a Class A fire rating

Explore why builders and contractors trust this high-performing solution for code-compliant, fire-resistant roofing projects.

In an era where extreme weather events and wildfire risks are on the rise, roofing systems must do more than just protect against wind and rain; they need to be able to stand up to fire as well. MFM Building Products, a manufacturing leader of low-slope roofing membranes, steep-slope roofing underlayments, roof flashing products and specialty tapes for commercial and residential markets, is meeting this challenge. The Ultra HT Wind & Water Seal® now has a Class A fire rating when used with Class A asphalt shingles, delivering a powerful combination of fire resistance and superior waterproofing.

What is a Class A fire rating, and why does it matter?

A Class A fire rating is the highest classification for building materials that are able to resist the spread of flames on its surface, resist fire penetration from the exterior to the underside and resist recurring intermittent flames. These requirements are tested using the ASTM E180/ICC-ES AC188. This designation makes Ultra HT not only a durable choice but also a safer one, especially in wildfire-prone regions or areas with stringent building codes.

Ultra HT is a 45-mil, self-adhered roofing underlayment engineered for steep-slope roofing and re-roofing applications. Its high-temperature mastic can withstand up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, making it ideal for use under metal, shingle, shake and tile. Combined with a cross-laminated polyethylene top film and traction coating, Ultra HT also ensures excellent walkability during installation, adding a layer of safety for contractors.

Backed by proven testing

Beyond the fire rating, Ultra HT Wind & Water Seal has been thoroughly tested and approved under the following certifications:

  • ASTM D 1970
  • Florida Building Code FL #11842.3
  • Miami-Dade County approved
  • ICC-ES ESR-1737
  • LA County (LARC/LABC)
  • State of California (CRC/CBC)
  • Texas Department of Insurance listed
  • Fortified Building Program listed
  • Canadian CCM 14048-L
