A show floor build that makes a difference

Before the show opens, Scottsdale Construction Systems and its partner companies will prefabricate and assemble the steel frame of the barndominium in the METALCON exhibit hall. Throughout the event, attendees will be able to:

“This project goes beyond showcasing products — it’s about using our collective skills and resources to serve a greater purpose,” said Judy Geller, vice president of Trade Shows for PSMJ Resources, Inc., producers of METALCON. “Together with our partners, we’re creating something lasting for those who have sacrificed so much.”

After the show: Eagles Landing heads to montana

Once METALCON wraps up, the structure will be disassembled, transported and rebuilt at its permanent home in Hall, Montana. Site preparation will be completed in advance to ensure a smooth installation, with timing carefully aligned to accommodate fall and winter conditions. Set in a serene natural setting with access to fishing, hiking and other outdoor activities, Eagles Landing will provide a peaceful retreat for U.S. veterans — a place of rest, reflection and renewal.

Designed for purpose

The structure was designed by Stacee Lynn, founder of The Barndominium Company and widely known as The Barndominium Lady®. Her personal connection to the military community – her family is fourth generation military – fueled her commitment to this project. Collaborating with the Military Warriors Support Foundation, she designed Eagles Landing to balance modern aesthetics with functional, veteran-focused living, ensuring it serves as a sanctuary for those it serves.

How to get involved

MetalVue and the latest version of Roofing Passport not only simplify the estimating process but boost your sales capabilities!

Sheriwn-Williams' MetalVue program brings industry experts together to help manufacturers and contractors sell more metal roofs. The program includes integrations with companies like Roofle, EagleView and Sheridan Metal Resources to help with every part of the roofing process, from training and lead generation to finances and measurements! Recently, they updated their Roofing Passport, which aims to simplify and streamline the typically tedious estimating process. In this episode of MetalTalk™, Megan Ellsworth sat down with Junny Lee and Brendan McGinnis to talk about Roofing Passport and how it fits into the MetalVue program.

Brendan, MetalVue’s OEM program manager, explained the core of what the Roofing Passport aims to do as a part of the MetalVue program. He shared, “From quoting and bidding to estimating a job, that's typically been the biggest amount of heartburn that you would get when trying to sell or quote or install a metal roof...Instead of doing this all by hand, Roofing Passport allows you to enter an address; upload blueprints, plans or drawings; or add an existing three-dimensional XML file directly into the program.” Then, a a little while later, you will have a complete material take off list that allows you to fully build out the rest of your estimate. This means that you can have a quote ready to present to homeowners on the first call, before you’ve even been on their roof, making the sale easier to secure.

Junny, who has worked with Sherwin-Williams for over a decade and is currently the marketing segment manager of MetalVue, explained how Roofing Passport fits into the larger MetalVue program. They shared, “MetalVue is the chassis, the Roofing Passport is the engine...You can track all your projects within the new Roofing Passport. The UI/UX is significantly improved, made user-friendly. It's a nice clean dashboard. You can manage your jobs, your projects, your quotes much better, much more efficiently than in the past. The idea is to help you succeed in metal.”

Making new connections, meeting new people, having new experiences were all part of our focus for NWIR Days 2025.

Editor’s note: The following is a transcript of a conversation between the Coffee Shop crew about NWIR Days 2025.

Megan Ellsworth: I attended the yoga session for the first day of National Women in Roofing (NWIR) Days 2025, and Mandy McIntyre with Level Up Consultants was the yoga instructor. And it was really nice, because I had been flying that morning, and so it was nice to just stretch and see all my friends and get registered and get our goody bags and get our ribbons for the nametags. I loved the different ribbons you could add to your badge this year, and they had all sorts of fun pins to personalize it. And the yoga was a blast with Jessica, Itzel, Dani and Heidi

And then I wasn’t able to, but everyone else attended the book club for Katie Goodman’s book Improvisation of the Spirit, and they had a good time. They did a bunch of improv activities and storytelling, and came up with some very creative and interesting stories that we all got to enjoy once the rest of us got in from our travel day.

Then we went to dinner at the caverns outside of San Antonio, and that was really cool. We were 180 feet under the earth, in the earth, 18 stories down in a cavern, and we ate dinner and we got to ride the magic carpet back up out of the cavern.

Lauren White: The caverns was very cool. That was the first time doing a type of event like this, which was really fun. Not everyone could make it, unfortunately, but it was a pretty unique experience, and definitely a talking point too, for people at NWIR Days, day two to talk about and share about.

And then we rolled into day two of NWIR Days, with the theme of Focus.

Karen Edwards: So Katie, the author of the book for book club yesterday was our keynote, and she had a really nice talk that was interactive and had the audience members participating and understanding how you need to be present in the moment and not thinking three steps ahead because you miss things. And I thought that was really interesting. And I really liked the last exercise we did where you had to run and grab a hat, and your table mates had written down five random words, and you had the person who grabbed the hat had one minute to tell the story in one minute using all five of those words. It was so funny.

Then we went into our breakout sessions. Lauren, Dani and I attended the power networking panel, which Lee Lipniskis with Levello Construction and Casey Troxclair from KPost Company moderated a panel with Kristina Hill with Harness and Heels and Home Shield Roofing & Exteriors, Brittany Wimbish with Fields Roof Services and Wendy Lucas with PB Roofing. And it was really interesting. I loved how they focused on who YOU are. Your name, your job and what you do is not what should define you. It should be more about who you are as a person. And they gave some really great tips on how to talk to people and have those conversations and ways to not be nervous and find success in networking and how it can change your career. And they shared their personal stories. So that was that was really helpful, I think for a lot of people in the room.

Megan Ellsworth: In the first session I went to, it was about fighting the inferiority complex that was presented by Sarah Lechowich with True North Roofing and Rae Fistonich with Chinook Building Envelope Systems and it was a really, really great class. They had some fun, interactive questions. You could, you could, kind of had to reword to make it more like the some of the statements were, I am a failure. I should have like, why am I here? Whatever. And then you had to reword it and say it with a new way to think about a mistake you made or a feeling that you're having about being inferior to someone at work or whatever. And I really, really enjoyed that class.

And then Heidi and I gave our class on podcasts, and it was really fun. We had a big turnout, and I got to learn about some podcasts that people are wanting to do, which was cool. Someone chat with me about wanting to start a podcast about Christmas, and the origins of Christmas, which was really cool. It was really fun to just talk about podcasts for an hour. And then the other class I attended was, the panel on the four different generations being in the workforce right now. So those are the Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennial and Gen Z. So they had someone from each generation on the panel, and people from the audience were asking questions, and it was kind of fun, and it got a little fiery at the end, with the different generations talking about each other. And my favorite part of that was my friend Lilli Tillman Smith from Principia Consulting was on that panel.

Lauren White: I also went with several members of our crew to the metal roofing 101 session with John Sheridan of Sheridan Tools, Michelle Kettering of LTD Exteriors and Leanne Slattery with ATAS International stepped in for Renee Ramey from the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) for this presentation. And we learned more about the benefits of metal roofing, and then most of it was a demonstration, and it was hands on. So they had a deck, and had some metal panels, and people from the audience were in there, able to drill them into the decking and ask questions. And so that was really fun to actually see it get installed on a fake roof, but see what it would look like.

And then the last session I went to with Dani was how to engage with the next generation of roofers, concentrating on SkillsUSA, which I think is the first time there's ever been a presentation at NWIR Days about SkillsUSA. So John Esbenshade from the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) presented about that, and people were very interested. And especially for the last session of the day, people were engaged in asking questions, and how can they get more involved, and I'm glad that it was a good turnout for people as well.

And then we all came back together for the awards and closing ceremony, and they presented the Rising Star and the WORLD Award winners. The Rising Star award winner this year is Sarah Sutton-Shouse of Raincoat Roofing in Chicago, Illinois. And then the WORLD Award, which was pretty special is Rachel Garcia from Malarkey Roofing in Oregon and she’s the chair of the NWIR Oregon Council, and of the five years that they've done the WORLD Award, four of them have been from Oregon and the Oregon Council. That was special. Then we officially welcomed our new NWIR chair Christee Roberson with Graham Roofing.

They also, for the first time, did council awards for different councils across the states that had submitted either projects or who were just doing new and innovative things, which was really cool, and the first time they ever did that, so that was nice to recognize some of the council work. And then throughout the day, RoofersCoffeeShop was live streaming for people who weren’t able to attend in person. We also did diamond sponsor spotlights, which Megan created all the videos for.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes, the spotlight videos were for each of the nine diamond sponsors and we made videos to spotlight an employee that's a part of National Women in Roofing that's doing great things. And then that wrapped it up, yeah? And anything else that I did?

Lauren White: Oh, and something else new they did this year was for lunch. They mixed it up because usually we sit with people from our regions, and this year they had different colored cameras because the theme was focus.

So everyone reached into a bucket and picked out a color - red, purple, green, blue - and then you sat at the table with a bunch of other people who picked that color as well, which was a fun way to meet new people and interact with them.

Karen Edwards: It was a long day, but overall, really great and really fun to see people. There were about 580 people in attendance this year, which is pretty amazing. Biggest year yet.

Lauren White: Looking forward to next year!

Lessons to help make website design a game-changer for contractors.

In today’s increasingly digital world, building a professional and effective online presence is essential for any business, a truth Sheridan Metal Resources has fully embraced in its latest website overhaul. Company leaders John Sheridan, owner of Sheridan Metal Resources, is working with Michelle Kettering, CEO of LTD Exteriors and sales and training coordinator at Sheridan Metal Resources to offer contractors vital insights drawn from personal experience, expressing the importance of connecting with website developers who understand the industry. “That website is going to be an extension of your business,” Michelle explains, urging business owners to invest time in researching and communicating their needs with developers to achieve an online presence that truly serves their brand.

For Sheridan Metal Resources, a contractor-focused company, the revamped website isn’t merely a facelift. The updated platform includes a streamlined tool-buying and training sign-up experience for contractors, who can now access essential resources in one centralized digital space. John expressed that this new approach is critical as they incorporate more training opportunities, including international and Spanish-language options. “Once it’s set up the way we want, it’s going to be a really useful thing for people,” he shares, noting the platform’s evolving role in contractor education.

The decision to refine the company’s website came from a need to manage the increasing demand for training and tools better and to broaden John’s reach internationally. Michelle states that a well-thought-out online presence “also helps us bring in people internationally,” building connections across borders that would otherwise be inaccessible. This expanded reach is also a foundation for partnerships with industry leaders, such as Malco and Sherwin-Williams, whose collaborations will further enhance the training options available on the platform.

For industry professionals looking to expand their online footprint, Michelle has a clear message: “My biggest piece of advice is do your research, ask questions, make sure you have some kind of a connection with the people that are working on your website.” This advice, based on hard-learned lessons, is a reminder of the importance of strategic planning and careful selection of partners in digital development. The revamped Sheridan Metal Resources site aims to set a standard for contractor-focused digital platforms, making it a model worth following for anyone in the industry looking to expand their brand effectively.

Proper care and routine inspections can maximize the lifespan of your metal roofing system.

Editor’s note: Share this informative article about metal roofing with customers interested in learning how to care for their roofs.

Metal roofs offer home and business owners an impressive level of durability against harsh climates and weather conditions. It’s important to regularly maintain your metal roof to make sure all facets of the system are functioning at full capacity.

How often you clean a metal roof will depend on unique factors, including the region you live in and the design of your roof.

Sheffield Metals International is an industry-leading metal roofing supplier that provides metal coils, sheets and accessories to contractors and fabricators. With over two decades in business and six branches spread out across the United States, we understand the ins and outs of metal roofing and what it takes to produce a product that lasts.

In this article, we’ll look at the different factors affecting how often you clean a metal roof and how to know when it is time to clean.

Schedule regular inspections

One of the best ways to determine whether you need to clean your metal roof is to inspect it. Looking at your roof from a distance may enable you to see any large debris such as branches or leaves, but a professional inspection will provide more clarity.

Metal roofs can be tricky to navigate, especially those with steeper slopes, so it’s best to enlist a professional inspection company to do it for you. Reliable inspection companies can typically be provided by the contractor you work with to install your roof.

Inspectors will be able to look for common surface-level problems on the roof, such as standing water, mildew, or scratches. These inspections can also unearth any structural issues of the roof, such as loose fasteners or damaged flashing, which is essential to catch before it causes further issues on your metal roof.

You’ll find varying answers for how often to have a metal roof inspected — many recommend twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. This too will be dictated by other factors, such as the region you live in and whether your area receives snow or extreme weather.

Keep regional weather in mind

Metal roofs in milder climates may not need to be cleaned as often as those in coastal areas which can receive extreme weather like hurricanes. Still, every region has its unique characteristics that could make annual or bi-annual cleanings needed.

Be aware of severe weather such as heavy rains, winds and excessive snowfall. Storms can down branches, sticks and leaves, which can accumulate and cause problems for your roof.

After an extreme weather event, it’s a good idea to get an inspection and have your roof cleaned if needed to prevent any potential issues. Your specific location is crucial, too — if your home or building is located near or underneath trees, it may make your roof more prone to debris accumulation.

Also, speak with your contractor and check your warranty for guidance on how to often to clean your metal roof. Some warranties, particularly coastal warranties, may require metal roofs to be sprayed with freshwater twice a year to deter saltwater corrosion and keep your warranty valid.

Understand your roofing design

The design of a metal roof — especially the slope — can also impact how often you’ll need to clean a metal roof. Flatter roofs with a lower slope will likely hold more debris and can collect standing water easier, so consider scheduling regular inspections and cleanings for these types of designs.

The color you choose may also play a role. A white metal roof, for example, will show more imperfections like dirt and marks than a black roof, so it may demand more care to retain its appearance.

Often, some simple touch-ups with a paint pen can restore a metal roof to its original look. Premium paint systems like PVDF will also help defend your roof and keep it looking new.

Note additions added to your home

Any new additions added to your home or building that interferes with your metal roof could also be cause for a fresh cleaning. Metal roofing is a specialty type of roofing, after all, and it needs the right care to remain untarnished.

Other trades working on your home could have unexpected effects on your metal roof, such as scratches, scuffing or more serious issues like galvanic reaction, which occurs when dissimilar metals come into contact and create corrosion.

Materials such as copper, brick, concrete and certain types of lumber that encounter galvalume or aluminum and water can cause potential problems, so be sure you’re confirming materials with your installer beforehand and consulting a professional metal roofing contractor before any additions are made to the roof or siding.

Consult with a metal roofing contractor

How often you clean your metal roof will come down to your unique situation or your particular warranty requirements, including the region you live in, the design of your roof and any problems that are found during an inspection.

It’s best to rely on the judgment of a professional metal roofing expert or the manufacturer of the materials who understands the materials. With proper maintenance, you can remain confident in the longevity of your metal roof and retain its functional stability.

Looking for expert advice on metal roofing maintenance?

With metal roofing becoming increasingly popular, there’s more information than ever telling you how to care for metal roofs and best practices for maintenance. It can be challenging to navigate this advice and figure out the best approach. Speaking with a knowledgeable metal roofing expert can be very helpful in alleviating your fears and coming to a reasonable solution.

With new updates coming to sheridantools.com you’ll be able to find the tools you need to complete a job, sign up for training opportunities and access technical resources to improve your metal craftsmanship.

Sheridan Metal Resources is making it easier for contractors to access essential tools and training in one place, while expanding partnerships with manufacturers and contractors alike. Set to launch this month, John Sheridan, owner of Sheridan Metal Resources, is working with Michelle Kettering, CEO of LTD Exteriors and sales and training coordinator at Sheridan Metal Resources, to roll out a newly updated website experience. We sat down with them recently to get the inside scoop on some of the anticipated changes and to learn more about the importance of training in the metal roofing industry.

According to Michelle, the website will become “a one-stop shop for everybody. This is where you go to find training, and this is where you can find the tools that you’re going to learn to use or specialize in from the trainings.” John added, “The biggest change is that we’re trying to incorporate training into the website and have an active training schedule that we can use to monitor sign up, which we’ve never had before.”

They’re looking to expand some of their partnerships, which you can learn more about at METALCON this year, and the new scheduling system will allow contractors to easily access different types of training. John and Michelle are working on including more specialized programs, like a collaboration with Sherwin-Williams on an introduction to metal training, a women’s training through Sheridan Metal Resources and more trainings offered in Spanish.

The connection between tools and training is a critical component of the learning experience Sheridan Metal Resources offers. As Michelle points out, combining the right tools with proper training makes all the difference: “I’ve done a few trainings with John, and it’s incredible to see the moment when things click for contractors. As soon as they try a tool John demonstrates, they realize how much easier their work could be with the right tools and training.”

John is passionate about making sure contractors know how to use the tools they buy. He shared, “The last thing I want is for somebody to buy a tool that doesn’t solve the problem they’re buying it for, or that they don’t really know how to use. I always ask them what they’re using it for, and if I have a better option, I’ll suggest it. I want them to use the right tool and to do it efficiently.”

This hands-on approach will be on full display at METALCON 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia, where John will be back in the Training Zone for live demonstrations. John shared, “I want contractors to have easy access to all of these on our website.” Once you see the tools in action, you’ll know right where you can go to add them to your toolbox and expand your knowledge with additional training.

With Sheridan Metal Resources’ focus on combining tools and training, contractors can streamline their work and become more talented, efficient and successful in the metal industry. Don’t miss the chance to see John’s expertise in action at METALCON.

Don’t miss the Training Zone and your chance to find community, training and expert advice all in one spot!

It’s time to finalize your travel plans to make sure you get to Atlanta, Georgia for METALCON at the end of October! This is the place to be for all things metal, with an incredible trade show taking place October 30-November 1 showcasing everything from solar to substrate to management services and more! Further, the show hosts a variety of educational opportunities and is a great space to meet members of the industry and learn from experts like John Sheridan. John owns Sheridan Metal Resources LLC, which focuses on selling tools and training professionals in the field. He is well-known in the industry for being a master of all things training.

John’s journey started in the 1990s, when a friend started repping VMZINC, a French company. He explained, “VMZINC and RHEINZINK were the first two from Europe to come to the U.S. They had a totally different philosophy of different systems, different installation methods, tools, etc. So they started to do trainings in the U.S. in the early 2000s and I started going to them.” By 2003 John was one of their trainers and he hasn’t looked back since, sharing, “Over the years through training I created this monster of a network and from that network more diverse trainings about different products, different groups of people, different disciplines, all kinds of things grew.”

One part of the network that John has surrounded himself with is the Sherwin Williams MetalVue program. This program connects manufacturers, contractors and other industry professionals to promote and support the metal business. He explained, “It's a pretty involved program by Sherwin-Williams and we are just a small part of that program on the training side of things. So we try to promote training and Sherwin-Williams likes the idea of that because you can raise sales all you want, but if you don't have qualified people to do the work, then your sales won’t work.” That philosophy is why Sherwin-Williams is sending John to host their Training Zone at METALCON 2024!

This is the second year that the Training Zone has been run at METALCON. The space is sponsored by VM Building Solutions, Dri-Design, Helix Metals, Roofinox, Malco Tools and Mazzonetto. John shared, “We were fortunate enough last year to do the Training Zone in Las Vegas. It went so well that they're giving us a space that's twice as big.” This is a can’t miss part of METALCON, with a whole list of industry heavy weights like Drexel Metals and Watts Removal Products at the booth ready to help visitors with everything from demos to questions. John explained, “Anybody walking by can stop in and check out whatever they want to check out. We'll have several different manufacturers in that space and all of those are going to be hands on. So, anybody who wants to jump in and join us when we're installing something, they're welcome to come in and poke around and play with the tools, ask us questions, etc.” There will even be representatives from National Roofing Contractors Association there as part of a cross-training/promoting initiative!

And if you’re interested in becoming a part of the incredible MetalVue network, this is the place to get all your questions answered! John highly recommends prioritizing spending time in these community and networking spaces, sharing, “We don't very often get into the same space and have a chance to share information. You know, take your time, walk the show, stop and talk to people and gain some knowledge and use that knowledge to build a network.”

If you haven’t already registered for METALCON 2024, do so today!

Stacee Lynn, known as the Barndominium Lady, will present “The Intentional Accidental Business,” sharing her experiences and challenges that got her to where she is today. Stacee Lynn defines a Barndominium as a “custom-designed, steel frame and single-family residence with metal roofing and siding.” When people learn about Barndominiums, she says they will never look at a metal building the same way again, helping people live the laid-back life they want.

“Since I was a child, I have always been attracted to architecture and design,” Stacee Lynn says. “I got a very late start in this space because when I was in high school, a teacher told me that I would never cut it as an architect. She said I was weak in math, but I am, in fact, very strong in math. However, that comment sent me down another creative path in marketing and communications that would affect me in my current business as well.

“So, I would design my home projects just for fun for my family. As it turns out, two of my homes ended up on the covers of real estate magazines when they were sold. When I lived in Austin (Texas), I designed our family home. The builder entered that home into a local design competition … we beat every architect in Austin except one!! I did all this outside the industry. My family continued to encourage me to jump into this space, but I waited.”

Stacee Lynn says she jumped in with both feet during Covid 19. “I had designed and built a Barndominium style home that I shared on social media,” she says. “Via social media and a following that has grown to 1.7 million people, it is fair to say that our clear span, residential designs caught the public eye and a design business was born. There is something about a unique, useful, beautiful space that you can call home. There is something about residential steel that beats a traditional stick build every time. We make steel sexy!”

Becoming a successful woman in the metal construction industry had some hurdles, but Stacee Lynn says everyone deals with that in most fields. “Construction is still a predominantly male-dominated industry across virtually every segment. From designing to dirt work, to general contracting, subcontracting and even supporting products, men are a significant percentage of the workforce,” she says. “But women, who like, understand and excel in this space are making incredible headway.”

Stacee Lynn’s satisfaction comes from being a part of the process, witnessing every Barndominium evolve, from idea to finished project. “There are few finer feelings than to see one of our designs escape the world of paper, rendering and virtual reality to float across a client’s property, land on the build site and beginning to take form,” she says. “To know that a client has poured foundation, ordered steel and begun building is exciting. The only thing better than walking and touring a project in progress is walking that same project when it’s finished and knowing that our ideas are a client’s dream come to life.

“We have a chance to impact and change lives daily. We affect our clients’ lives and lifestyle. We help them build and live their dream. That notion makes being the Barndominium Lady and the leader of our team a fabulous thing. I love it and our team loves it.”

Michelle Kettering, the founder and CEO of LTD Exteriors of Spring Lake, North Carolina, and the sales & training coordinator for Sheridan Metal Resources of Reading, Pa., will be on the METALCON tradeshow floor, as a trainer in the TrainingZone. Kettering will be one of many trainers from across the country rounded up by John Sheridan for a second year at the show. They will be showcasing different tools, techniques and materials, providing attendees the opportunity to see, feel and try out the tools and techniques.

Kettering admits her goals and ambitions were certainly heading in a direction nowhere near construction. “Construction was not a love at first sight thing for me,” she says. The construction industry was not something I had even considered as a career path. However, in 2000, my brother-in-law introduced me to construction when he hired me to assist in the operations of his new roofing company. Although I enjoyed learning about the industry, I had other goals at the time. Through the years, my roles in different industries continued drawing me back to construction until it became a passion of mine.

“While challenges remain, the overall attitude toward women in construction has become more positive and inclusive. People are generally more supportive and accepting now, recognizing that women bring significant value and unique perspective to the construction industry.” Kettering says she enjoys the work and the people in the industry. “Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to educate and empower others with information and/or solutions regarding their projects,” she says.

Women are making their mark in the metal construction industry and there is room for more.
