<p>Low-slope roofing manufacturer <a href="http://www.mulehide.com/About/About-MuleHide">MuleHide</a> has hired Garen Rodriguez as territory manager for Chicago.</p>

<p>He is the company&rsquo;s lead contact with customers in the territory. His responsibilities include helping ensure that projects are completed efficiently and according to specification, working with contractors and ABC Supply Co. Inc. branch teams to develop the best solutions to meet property owners&rsquo; roofing needs and providing ongoing product, technical and sales training for contractors and ABC Supply associates.</p>

<p>Rodriguez comes to MuleHide from commercial roofing contractor Waukegan Roofing Co. Inc. in Waukegan, Illinois, where he had been an operations manager focusing on quality control and safety since 2023. Prior to that, he was a field service representative for Carlisle SynTec Systems for six years. His introduction to the roofing industry was as a fire laboratory technician with UL and then as a waterproofing leak technician for International Leak Detection.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Garen has a wide-ranging background in commercial roofing, from working for a Tier 1 commercial contractor to conducting warranty inspections and even testing roofing products for fire safety,&rdquo; said Dan Conley, regional director for the Midwest. &ldquo;We are proud to have him bring that hands-on experience and his exceptional project management skills to the MuleHide team.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rodriguez is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served in the fire department.</p>

<p>He has an associate&rsquo;s degree from Harper College in Palatine, Illinois.</p>

<h2>Careful roof evaluation, proper adhesive handling and contractor training are essential to successful fleece back recover projects.&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Fleece back membranes can streamline recover projects, but the existing roof must provide a sound foundation for the new system. <a href="https://www.rooferscoffeeshop.com/podcast/tony-vieira-fleece-back-advantage-smarter-roof-recovers">In this episode of Roofing Road Trips&reg;</a>, host Karen Edwards spoke with <a href="https://www.rooferscoffeeshop.com/directory/mule-hide">MuleHide</a>&rsquo;s Tony Vieira about the conditions contractors should evaluate before recommending a fleece back recover.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Moisture is one of the most important considerations. Wet or water-damaged insulation should be removed and replaced, and extensive damage may make a tear-off the more practical approach. Tony said moisture surveys can help identify affected sections without disturbing the roof. He explained, &ldquo;Wet damaged or wet areas of insulation can be determined just by a moisture survey. It&rsquo;s a non-invasive way to see if there&rsquo;s wet areas in that roof that could potentially need to be removed and replaced.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The condition and attachment of the existing membrane also matters because the recover system depends on the roof below it. Loose membranes must be secured, and MuleHide requires an existing system to be fully adhered for a direct recover. Tony cautioned against installing directly over mechanically fastened, ballasted or gravel-surfaced built-up roof systems. Existing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes are also excluded from the direct-recover applications discussed in the episode.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Contractors must also confirm how many roof systems are already in place. Tony explained, &ldquo;Building code generally states that you can have two roof systems in place. You can&rsquo;t put a third one on top.&rdquo; This generally prevents a third system from being installed as a recover.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Once a roof is approved, proper low-rise foam adhesive application becomes critical. The two-component adhesive must be stored at an appropriate temperature, mixed correctly and allowed to foam before the membrane is placed. Tony recommended checking the adhesive with a gloved hand for strings that resemble a &ldquo;cheesy quesadilla,&rdquo; indicating it is within the application window.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Training helps contractors recognize those conditions and avoid adhesive that is still wet or has become too dry. Contractors seeking approval to install warranted MuleHide systems must coordinate with their local representative and complete certification training.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Built-up roofing, modified bitumen, single-ply membranes and fluid-applied systems each offer distinct advantages for low-slope roofing projects.&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Understanding how each component works together is key to selecting the right low-slope roofing system. <a href="https://www.rooferscoffeeshop.com/directory/mule-hide">MuleHide</a> compares the assembly to an open-faced sandwich, with the roof deck serving as the bread, insulation or cover board as the meat and the roof covering as the final layer. For that top layer, contractors and building owners can choose from four primary options: built-up roofing, modified bitumen, single-ply membranes and fluid-applied systems.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Built-up roofing (BUR), the oldest option, uses alternating layers of hot asphalt and fiberglass reinforcing fabric. Its redundant construction creates a durable, low-maintenance surface, although newer systems have become more common because they are generally easier to install.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Modified bitumen, often called mod bit, updates the BUR concept with polymer-modified asphalt sheets. Cap sheets may be self-adhering or torch-applied.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Single-ply systems, including ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), are the dominant low-slope choice today. These lightweight membranes can be mechanically attached, fully adhered or ballasted. EPDM is commonly black and uses taped seams, while TPO and PVC membranes are heat welded and typically white in color. White membranes can also reflect solar energy, helping lower rooftop and interior temperatures.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fluid-applied acrylic and silicone coatings can extend the service life of a sound existing roof while reducing landfill waste. Silicone performs better during occasional ponding water and humid conditions, while acrylic often costs less and cures faster in dry climates. Before coating, contractors must evaluate the roof and repair leaks, saturated insulation or other existing problems.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Understanding how roof decks, insulation, cover boards and roof coverings work together is essential to long-term roof performance.&nbsp;</h2>

<p>According to <a href="https://www.rooferscoffeeshop.com/directory/mule-hide">MuleHide</a>, the performance of a low-slope roofing system depends on several layers working together to support the roof, control heat transfer and protect the building from weather and other damaging forces. These primary components include the roof deck, insulation or cover board and the roof covering.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The roof deck is the structural foundation to which the roofing system is applied. It supports the system&rsquo;s weight, rooftop equipment and expected foot traffic while providing a flat installation surface. Steel is the most-used roof deck material, followed by wood products such as plywood, planks and oriented strand board (OSB). Structural concrete, cementitious wood fiber, gypsum and lightweight insulating concrete are less common alternatives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Installed above the deck, insulation reduces heat transfer between the building&rsquo;s interior and the surrounding environment. Polyisocyanurate, commonly called polyiso, provides the highest R-value and is the most widely used option. Expanded polystyrene (EPS), tapered insulation and flute filler also serve specific roofing applications, including improving drainage or creating a level surface over metal panels.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cover boards provide a durable substrate for attaching the roof covering. They may be required when a covering cannot be attached directly to the insulation, but they can also improve performance when used as an additional layer. Cover boards help limit fire spread, distribute wind forces and protect insulation from hail, foot traffic and compression. Common options include fiberboard, gypsum-fiber boards, glass-mat faced gypsum boards and high-density poly ISO cover boards. Each offers different combinations of strength, insulation value, moisture resistance and ease of handling.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The roof covering completes the assembly by shielding the system from sun, rain, snow, hail, chemicals, equipment and extreme temperatures. Available systems include built-up roofing (BUR), modified bitumen, single-ply membranes and fluid-applied coatings.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">The new <strong>MuleHide TempReady Gun</strong> from low-slope roofing manufacturer <a href="https://www.mulehide.com/About/About-MuleHide" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>MuleHide</strong></a> helps take the guesswork out of adhesive application. Included with <a href="https://www.mulehide.com/Products/p/HelixMAXLowRiseAdhesiveDualTankFeaturingtheMuleHideTempReadyGun" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Helix&reg; MAX Low-Rise Adhesive &ndash; Dual Tank</strong></a><strong>, </strong>it tells the operator whether the adhesive is at the proper temperature for application, helping ensure optimal performance.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Helix MAX Low-Rise Adhesive is a construction-grade, two-component polyurethane adhesive designed to bond MuleHide insulations and fleece-back single-ply membranes (TPO, PVC or PVC KEE HP) to a variety of substrates. Temperature during application is an important consideration. Proper application temperature is when the material in the tanks is between 70 F and 90 F.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The MuleHide TempReady Gun assembly has a built-in sensor that monitors the temperature of the material coming from the tanks. Three LED lights on the back of the gun provide clear visual indication of whether the adhesive is ready to be applied; blue means too cold (below 70F), green signifies an optimal temperature (70 F &ndash; 90 F) and red indicates too hot (above 90 F).</p>

<p dir="ltr">The 25-foot assembly is battery-powered. The self-engaging safety helps prevent accidental dispensing of the adhesive; the operator must disengage it to begin applying the product and it re-activates automatically when the trigger is released.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The MuleHide TempReady Gun is found in the Part A Box of Helix MAX Low-Rise Adhesive &ndash; Dual Tank, along with 10 tank nozzle tips for use in splatter pattern application, 10 tip extension tubes to add for bead application, a wrench to use in attaching the hose assembly to the tanks and a packet of lithium grease for keeping the O-ring and face of the gun clean during application.</p>

<p>Si has pasado tu carrera trabajando sobre techos inclinados, subir a un sistema de baja pendiente puede sentirse como entrar a una profesi&oacute;n completamente distinta. Los materiales cambian. Los m&eacute;todos de instalaci&oacute;n son diferentes. Incluso el vocabulario se transforma. Un techo &quot;plano&quot; no es realmente plano, la impermeabilizaci&oacute;n se convierte en la prioridad principal y la l&iacute;nea que separa los proyectos comerciales de los residenciales puede volverse confusa r&aacute;pidamente. <h3>&iquest;Qu&eacute; es un techo de baja pendiente?&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Entonces, &iquest;qu&eacute; es un techo de baja pendiente y en qu&eacute; se diferencia de un techo inclinado?&nbsp;</p>

<p><em><strong>Baja pendiente, no sin pendiente&nbsp;</strong></em></p>

<p>Un techo de baja pendiente tiene una inclinaci&oacute;n de 2/12 o menor. Esto significa que por cada 12 pulgadas de recorrido horizontal, el techo se eleva 2 pulgadas o menos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Con frecuencia, los techos de baja pendiente son llamados &quot;techos planos&quot;, pero en realidad ning&uacute;n techo es completamente plano. El agua es una de las fuerzas m&aacute;s destructivas de la naturaleza (despu&eacute;s de todo, fue responsable de formar el Gran Ca&ntilde;&oacute;n) y debe ser evacuada del techo lo m&aacute;s r&aacute;pido posible. <p><em><strong>Impermeables vs. sistemas que desalojan el agua&nbsp;</strong></em></p>

<p>Los techos de baja pendiente est&aacute;n dise&ntilde;ados para ser impermeables, aunque tambi&eacute;n incorporan sistemas de drenaje. Por otro lado, los techos inclinados desalojan el agua m&aacute;s r&aacute;pidamente gracias a su mayor pendiente. En un sistema de baja pendiente, la membrana del techo, junto con los selladores utilizados en remates y uniones, evita que el agua penetre en el sistema de roofing. Los techos inclinados dependen principalmente de la gravedad generada por su inclinaci&oacute;n para conducir el agua fuera de la superficie del techo.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>No debe confundirse con &quot;techo comercial&quot;&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Muchas personas utilizan los t&eacute;rminos &quot;techo de baja pendiente&quot; y &quot;techo comercial&quot; como si significaran lo mismo, pero no son sin&oacute;nimos. &quot;Baja pendiente&quot; se refiere a la inclinaci&oacute;n del techo, mientras que &quot;comercial&quot; describe el tipo de edificio que cubre. Muchos edificios comerciales como iglesias, hoteles, escuelas, centros m&eacute;dicos, restaurantes y establecimientos comerciales cuentan con techos inclinados. De igual manera, los techos de baja pendiente tambi&eacute;n pueden encontrarse en muchas viviendas residenciales, especialmente en regiones &aacute;ridas del suroeste de Estados Unidos, donde el drenaje representa una preocupaci&oacute;n menor.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em><strong>Materiales utilizados&nbsp;</strong></em></p>

<p>Los techos de baja pendiente generalmente utilizan membranas monocapa (single-ply), l&aacute;minas prefabricadas o sistemas compuestos por capas de asfalto. Por su parte, los techos inclinados suelen construirse con tejas asf&aacute;lticas, tejas de concreto o barro, o paneles met&aacute;licos.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>Breve historia del roofing de baja pendiente&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Los sistemas de techo multicapa (Built-Up Roofing o BUR) son el tipo m&aacute;s antiguo de techo de baja pendiente que a&uacute;n se utiliza en la actualidad. Los primeros sistemas BUR se constru&iacute;an aplicando m&uacute;ltiples capas de fieltro impregnado con alquitr&aacute;n y posteriormente una capa superior de grava mezclada con alquitr&aacute;n caliente. Durante la d&eacute;cada de 1870, el asfalto sustituy&oacute; al alquitr&aacute;n como material principal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Los sistemas de bet&uacute;n modificado (Modified Bitumen o Mod Bit) surgieron en la d&eacute;cada de 1970. Aunque siguen siendo sistemas basados en asfalto, incorporan modificadores elastom&eacute;ricos en las l&aacute;minas, lo que mejora su flexibilidad y ofrece una versi&oacute;n m&aacute;s moderna de los sistemas BUR, adem&aacute;s de facilitar y acelerar su instalaci&oacute;n.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Los sistemas de roofing monocapa comenzaron a utilizarse en Estados Unidos durante la d&eacute;cada de 1960. Los primeros fueron los sistemas EPDM y PVC, cuya popularidad creci&oacute; debido a la escasez y el aumento de costo del asfalto de alta calidad para roofing. Posteriormente lleg&oacute; el TPO a principios de la d&eacute;cada de 1990 y actualmente es el material de baja pendiente m&aacute;s utilizado en el mercado.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Los sistemas de roofing aplicados en forma l&iacute;quida &mdash; tambi&eacute;n conocidos como recubrimientos para techos o roof coatings &mdash; se utilizan desde la d&eacute;cada de 1950 para restaurar techos envejecidos y devolverlos a una condici&oacute;n cercana a la original.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Las mejoras continuas en su desempe&ntilde;o y facilidad de aplicaci&oacute;n han convertido a los recubrimientos en el segmento de mayor crecimiento dentro de la industria del roofing de baja pendiente. M&aacute;s adelante en esta serie analizaremos cada uno de estos sistemas de cubierta, explicando su composici&oacute;n y las caracter&iacute;sticas que los diferencian. Sin embargo, es importante recordar que estas cubiertas representan &uacute;nicamente la capa final de un sistema compuesto por m&uacute;ltiples elementos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>En la pr&oacute;xima entrega, desglosaremos un sistema de roofing de baja pendiente capa por capa y explicaremos el papel fundamental que desempe&ntilde;a cada componente en el rendimiento general del techo.&nbsp;</p>
