All Weather Insulated Panel (AWIP) might be known for their high-performance metal panel products that offer both durability and insulation to the structures they are installed on, but their efforts go far beyond just the finished products they make. To learn more about the company behind the products, we sat down with Greg Lusty, AWIP’s president, for a short interview.  

AWIP’s story starts back in 2006, doing what they do today – manufacturing insulated panels for roofs, walls and other construction applications. As their products started to gain traction in the construction world, the company grew. Today, the brand now utilizes three facilities. 

How did they gain that initial traction needed to kickstart their growth? By providing more than just products, but support for the people they serve. Greg explained, “We truly operate in a customer-first manner. Our decision-making process and then beyond that it's about, it's all about people. The products are great, don’t get me wrong, but everyone has products, not everyone cares for customers the way we do.”  

What does this care look like in action? AWIP has prioritized providing specialized support for their contractors and customers. Greg shared, “We have teams that are dedicated to helping our customers. We have strategic/national accounts and/or business/architectural consultants who are there to help with everything from architectural design services, engineering and drafting to estimating, project management and more.”

Honoring Mark's life and accomplishments.

We are deeply saddened to share that my longtime pillar of the metal building community Mark James passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026. Mark is survived by his wife of 55 years Paula, his son Jarrod, his grandchildren Brooklyn, Harley, Julian and his great-grandson Trevon. A service will be held in Dallas in the near future.

Mark’s career began remarkably early. At just eight years old, he worked as a blueprint boy for his father’s company. He later attended the University of Missouri and continued his education at night through the Finlay School of Engineering in Kansas City, Missouri.

In the late 1970s, Mark designed roof systems using dimensional lumber to retrofit flat roofs with truss-framed sloped roofs — Ultimately contributing to more than 30 million square feet of retrofit projects. In 1981, he was recruited by Kirby Building Systems as their Special Projects Manager, prompting a move to Houston, Texas. In 1984, he accepted a district manager position with United Structures of America, and four years later, in 1988, he became a partner in Genesis Group, Inc. of Baton Rouge, where he worked on both new metal buildings and retrofit projects.

Moving now to Dallas, Texas, Mark joined Roof Hugger, Inc. in 2009, where his impact was immediate and lasting. He developed standard details, product specifications, sales presentations and represented the company at numerous industry association meetings. He became deeply involved in the Metal Construction Association (MCA), eventually serving as chairman of the retrofit council. In that role, he helped create many of the AIA education programs that continue
to be used today.

He was a familiar face at RCI (now IIBEC), MBCEA and other industry organizations. Mark also played a major role in creating and setting up many of the METALCON Live Demo displays, including the Metal Roofing Games Competition and the Solar Bay exhibit. To say he was well known in our industry is an understatement.

After retiring from Roof Hugger in 2014, Mark founded his consulting firm, RetroSpec, LLC, continuing to advise Roof Hugger, MCA and many other metal-related companies. He and Paula then moved to Hot Springs, Arizona, where they enjoyed a beautiful home and surroundings and after buying a large camper, they traveled across the country while he continued consulting remotely.

In 2019, Mark received MCA’s prestigious Larry A. Swaney Award, recognizing his commitment to communication, cooperation, unity and the advancement of the metal construction industry. Beyond his professional achievements, Mark was an accomplished artist, cabinet maker and interior designer. He loved his family deeply, and those of us who knew and worked with him will miss him profoundly.

Artificial intelligence, leadership development and member participation are central to this year’s initiatives.

In its latest newsletter, the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA) is kicking off 2026 with important deadlines, expanded conference opportunities and a strong focus on artificial intelligence as a driver of progress across the metal building industry.

Members are encouraged to submit projects for the 2026 Building of the Year Contest by February 23 at mbceaawards.org. The competition showcases innovation, craftsmanship and excellence and is open exclusively to MBCEA members, making it an ideal time for companies to engage and gain national recognition.

Momentum continues to build toward the 57th Annual MBCEA Conference, April 22–24 in Colorado Springs, where attendee registration closes March 27. The event is positioned as the premier gathering for contractors, erectors, manufacturers and suppliers. This year’s format shifts to a management-style retreat with expanded networking and leadership education, while field-focused sessions will return next year. Exhibit space remains available although conference sponsorships are sold out, reflecting strong industry support. Applications are also being accepted for the MBCEA Pioneers Club, honoring contractors and erectors with at least 25 consecutive years in the industry.

In a message to members, MBCEA President David Leinbach emphasized that artificial intelligence will take center stage at the conference and throughout 2026. Once considered niche technology, AI is rapidly becoming a practical tool for improving project predictability, enhancing jobsite safety and reducing costly rework. AI-powered systems can analyze schedules and flag potential delays before they reach the field, while cameras and sensors detect missing PPE and unsafe behaviors in real time. Image recognition and 3D scanning tools compare jobsite conditions to digital plans, helping teams correct issues early and maintain quality.

AI is also helping contractors address workforce shortages by automating scheduling, material tracking and reporting, allowing skilled professionals to focus on installation and leadership. As prevailing wage requirements and regulatory oversight increase, AI-driven documentation improves compliance accuracy and reduces administrative strain. Leinbach noted that thoughtful adoption of technology is no longer optional for firms that want to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

Beyond the conference, MBCEA continues to provide technical and professional development resources. Free monthly webinars address Davis Bacon compliance and evolving air leakage requirements under ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC. Contractors are invited to submit entries for the 2026 Metal Construction News Top Metal Builders list by March 18. The MBCEA Technical Committee also provided guidance on factory versus field-applied caulking for insulated metal panels, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a continuous air and vapor barrier and carefully weighing labor efficiency against installation flexibility.

The Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA) is bringing together industry experts, thought leaders and innovators for a powerful lineup of education at this year’s MBCEA Conference. From economic forecasting and artificial intelligence to risk management, cash flow and workforce development, these sessions are designed to help metal building professionals strengthen their businesses and prepare for what’s ahead.

Industry outlook and economic trends

The conference will kick off with a highly anticipated keynote from economist Dr. Anirban Basu. Titled First Brood, this keynote sees Dr. Basu take a fast-paced, data-driven look at what 2026 may bring for the U.S. economy. After an exceptionally active 2025, many are asking whether momentum can continue or if economic uncertainty could signal the next recession.

Attendees will gain insight into employment trends, housing, commercial real estate, financial markets and overall economic output. Known for his engaging style, Dr. Basu delivers both clarity and perspective with a few surprises and even a laugh or two along the way.

Practical AI for construction companies

Artificial intelligence continues to reshape construction and at this year’s conference Zach Giglio will lead two sessions focused on real-world AI applications: Practical AI Applications for Construction Leaders and Teams and Proven Prompting Techniques for Construction Companies. 

These sessions aim to deliver hands-on guidance contractors can actually use. In Practical AI Applications for Construction Leaders and Teams, Zach explores how AI is already improving business development, project communication and jobsite management. And in Proven Prompting Techniques for Construction Companies, Zach breaks down what AI really is, how prompting works and how teams can apply it to daily workflows. Live examples will demonstrate how AI can support reporting, administrative tasks and internal communication.

Managing risk in a digital world

As technology expands, so do the risks. Josh Quinter and Karin Corbett will address these challenges in Policy and Risk Management in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.

This session explores privacy concerns, image rights, liability exposure and the growing role of technology in claims investigations. Attendees will walk away with practical risk management strategies along with sample policies to help protect both companies and employees in an evolving digital environment.

Technology adoption and cash flow solutions

For companies struggling with new software rollouts or financial bottlenecks, Claire Wilson offers two highly relevant breakout sessions: 

• Back on Track: Why Software Implementation Fails and How to Fix It: This session provides an industry-specific roadmap for successful technology adoption. Drawing on her experience as a former project manager and software co-founder, Claire explains why implementations stall and how to build rollout plans that actually work.
• 5 Secrets for Healthier Cash Flow: Claire tackles one of construction’s biggest challenges. With billions in unpaid construction loans annually, this session shares proven strategies to automate billing, reduce errors, manage change orders and improve collaboration between project management and accounting teams.

Accreditation, training and workforce development

Attendees interested in AC478 Accreditation will hear directly from accredited companies during a panel discussion focused on the process, benefits and real-world impact on their businesses.

Workforce development also takes center stage with PLAs, RCO’s and Apprenticeship and MB Curriculum, presented by Josh Quinter and Jen Heimburger. Digital construction and building envelopes

The All Weather Insulated Panels (AWIP) team will share their transformation story in Driving Efficiency and Sustainability Through Digital Construction. This session highlights how BIM, panelized systems and high-performance materials are reducing risk, accelerating schedules and supporting ESG goals. Real-world examples will showcase how digital tools, including emerging technologies like AI and AR/VR, are shaping the future of metal building envelopes.

Project management technology demos

Responding directly to member feedback, MBCEA will host a panel of project management vendors who will demonstrate their platforms live. Current users will join their vendors to share real-world experiences, offering attendees an honest look at how these tools can improve efficiency and daily operations.

S-5! announced that its Founder and CEO, Rob Haddock, has received the Patrick R. Bush Service Award from the Metal Construction Association (MCA). The honor was presented on January 14 during the MCA 2026 Winter Meeting in San Antonio.

The Patrick R. Bush Service Award recognizes outstanding volunteer contributions by an individual from an MCA member company. Established in honor of Patrick R. Bush, a longtime MCA board member, the award celebrates leadership and service that advance the metal construction industry.

“Rob’s years of service to the industry earned him the MCA’s Larry Swaney Award in 2015," said MCA Chair LeeAnne Slattery. "Now, in recognition of his extensive contributions to the MCA, including technical authorship, education and leadership service, I am proud to present Rob Haddock with the 2026 Patrick R. Bush Award.” 

Haddock has been an active contributor to the MCA for decades through participation in numerous committees, councils and technical initiatives. He has served on the MCA Roofing Task Group, Fasteners Task Group, Accessories Council and Wall Council. He also played a key role — alongside Tom Black and the National Coil Coaters Association — in the creation of the Metal Roofing Alliance, a national initiative that successfully advanced MCA’s goals within the residential construction sector.

In addition, Haddock has authored numerous technical white papers for the MCA, addressing critical industry topics including snow retention, solar and metal roofing integration, fastener compatibility, lightning protection, hail resistance and standards for metal roof attachments. His work has helped move the industry forward through improved education, testing and standardization.

A five-decade veteran of the metal roofing industry, his career began as a laborer and progressed through roles as a contractor, forensic consultant, technical author, educator, innovator, enterprise founder and CEO. Known throughout the industry as “the Metal Roofing Evangelist,” he is the founder of S-5! and Metal Roof Advisory Group, Ltd. His innovations — protected by more than 200 patents — have created an entirely new product category within metal roofing.

Haddock was inducted as an inaugural member of the Metal Construction Hall of Fame in 2012. His company has exhibited at METALCON for 33 consecutive years, and he regularly participates as a featured speaker. He also speaks annually at the International Roofing Expo and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Wisconsin’s College of Engineering.

Haddock was named a Lifetime Honorary Executive Member of both the MCA and the Metal Building Contractors & Erectors Association. He has received additional recognition from the Metal Building Manufacturers Association, Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, ASTM International and the Construction Specifications Institute.

Beyond his professional achievements, Haddock is a strong advocate for mentorship, industry engagement and philanthropy, supporting more than 20 non-profit organizations through his related enterprises and charitable foundation.

The project includes two metal buildings housing a gymnasium and ice hockey rink, each with 40-foot eave heights, standing-seam metal roofs and metal wall panels. Ironhide Construction of Lincoln, Nebraska, served as the metal building erector, and Chief Buildings of Grand Island, Nebraska, supplied the building systems. 

“Our 2025 Building of the Year video highlights the AdventHealth Sports Park at Bluhawk. The video features interviews with project leaders who provide insights into the vision, challenges and solutions that shaped the award-winning facility. Viewers will hear directly from the professionals who brought the project to life, emphasizing the strength, flexibility and aesthetic qualities of metal building construction. Interviewees include Chad Aldrich and Jeff Wolgamott of Ironhide Construction; Erin Sullivan of Chief Buildings; and Bart Lowen of Price Brothers Management Co.
