Malco’s new rotary shear attachment is designed to reduce noise, limit coating damage and extend tool life.  

In this Roofing Road Trips® episode, Austin Cash, senior new product development engineer for Malco Tools, discussed how Malco continues to create solutions that are designed with contractors in mind. In particular, Austin highlighted Malco’s TurboShear® Rotary Panel Cutter, a solution for cutting ribbed roofing and wall panels with unmatched precision and ease. 

“For over 20 years, Malco has been working on adapting a contractor's tool portfolio. The new TSPC1 is  a perfect example of that as we’ve created a solution that mounts directly to a tool they own, so they don't have to go buy a very expensive battery platform to use this tool,” Austin said. “If you got your drill that maybe your father passed down, you can throw this tool on there. You can use those products that you've already had for 10-20 years.” 

On top of making a tool that fits with contractors’ existing toolboxes, the TurboShear Rotary Panel Cutter also solves problems that traditional circular saws pose. “Those are very loud, and the sparks that fly in that process can be harmful. It's a very aggressive cutting process,” Austin shared. 

Furthermore, when using a circular saw, Austin noted that panel manufacturers may not honor warranties due to the abrasive cuts. “You're actually removing the protective coating,” Austin explained. “With a TurboShear, it's a controlled shearing motion; you're rolling over that edge when you cut it, so you're protecting the base substrate or the base material. This will allow those panel manufacturers to still stand behind warranties.” 

When it comes to long-term performance, the TurboShear is rated for 22-gauge metal roofing and 0.040 aluminum, with testing also completed on 20-ounce copper. “We’ve done some known abuse testing internally, which allows us to confidently say that this tool will last for approximately six months out of a cutting disc if it's something that you're using within our normal use criteria,” Austin shared. 

Designed for longevity, the product features “a completely sealed and greased gearbox. So, there'll be no maintenance needed by the end user,” and an instruction video for how to replace disks when the time comes. “We try to make it as easy as possible for these end users,” Austin said.

The Malco Group brought all of their brands to IRE, showcasing their commitment to ongoing innovation in the industry. 

The 2026 International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas marked a turning point for many brands as thousands of contractors, manufacturers and distributors met on the trade show floor. For Malco Tools, it was their first time showcasing products from the Malco Group brands alongside their own products designed for the metal roofing industry. Shane Norman, senior product manager at Malco Tools, joined Karen Edwards at The Coffee Shops™ Sound Stage to spotlight a few of these exciting new products.  

“We're highlighting our really high-end Unilite brand of trade-pro lighting solutions — really nice lighting,” Shane shared. Another solution the Malco team brought to the show for the first time is their line of Veto Pro Pac bags. He added, “Veto Pro Pac is a highly regarded brand in the HVAC industry for making great tool bags for all the HVAC trade pros. We're going to be working with Veto to design things for the RSG market as well.” 

These diverse offerings are part of the Malco Group’s strategy to move towards providing a total-solution package, positioning itself as a one-stop shop for customers' needs. “We’re combining all of the brands to be a stronger presence for the trade pros,” Shane stated.  

This stronger presence was recently felt during the fall at METALCON, when Malco Tools won an award for their new TSPC1 panel cutter. “It's a power-assisted, drill-attached rotary turbo shear, and it works really well for going up and over corrugated roofing panels or wall panels,” Shane explained. 

IRE attendees had a chance to witness a live demo of the TSPC1 at Malco’s booth and explore the Malco Group’s family of brands. “Now when they come to the Malco Group booth, instead of reminiscing on some of our older products, they're asking us what's new because they know we're developing more and more products,” Shane shared. “They're looking for Malco to lead with innovation, and it’s always great to see the excitement.”

Malco’s drill attachment, the TurboShear® Rotary Panel Cutter, makes jobs more ergonomic and efficient. 

In this Roofing Road Trips® episode, Austin Cash, senior new product development engineer for Malco Tools, spoke with Karen Edwards about one of the company’s newest innovations: the TurboShear® Rotary Panel Cutter.  

Malco has produced its TurboShear line of products for over 20 years, starting with the TS1, the first drill attachment shear. “That was a big engineering feat that improved ergonomics in the field. You take the hand snip out of the contractor, and you give them something that allows the drill to do the work,” Austin said. Since then, Malco has stayed committed to simplifying and improving the end user’s experience while expanding their product line to fulfill more applications. “We work on taking drill attachment solutions and making it so contractors can implement our products onto an existing tool they already own and have a new solution, a new tool.” 

The newest tool contractors have at their fingertips is the TurboShear Rotary Panel Cutter, a drill attachment designed to cut ribbed metal and vinyl roofing and wall panels with ease. “The thought process was, let's take this rotary shear, and it will roll over the panel as a drill attachment, which is our bread and butter,” Austin shared. “It's going to allow contractors to make those cuts more efficiently.” 

Compared to the traditional TurboShear, which offers a scissor action, the Rotary Panel Cutter showcases a rolling action, like a pizza cutter or can opener. “We have a stationary, non-driven disc on the bottom that freely spins, and then we have our drive wheel on the top,” Austin explained. “That drive wheel has serrations with gripping features, so that's what grabs the material and helps pull you up over those contours.”  

This self-advancing feature, along with its 22-gauge cutting capacity, allows for more efficient and precise cuts while also providing ergonomic benefits. “What you're doing is truly controlling the path that the tool is on,” Austin elaborated. “You don't have to hold it up because the material will naturally support itself. And then, you don't have to actually apply any forward pressure; the tool will, as you pull that trigger, naturally pull itself through the material.” 

This tool has already received raving reviews from customers who have used it to meet job site challenges, such as performing angled cuts at 45 degrees with precision. With the TurboShear Rotary Panel Cutter, the possibilities are endless. “Everyone uses these tools a little bit differently,” Austin said. “We try to design around known cases as well as we can, but the first time you put a tool in the contractor's hand, they might do something that you never thought of.”

Our recent MetalTalk™ highlights Malco Group’s broadened offerings and decades-long commitment to reliable solutions. 

In the latest MetalTalk™, Karen Edwards was joined by Malco Group’s Vice President of Marketing, Rebecca Talbot, to explore how the company is building on its 75-year legacy of innovation in the HVAC-R trades and the metal roofing and siding markets.  

In 2024, Malco Tools was acquired by Aspen Pumps Group, a move that brought a broader portfolio of solutions to The Malco Group’s offerings in the Americas. “With that came a whole new portfolio of solutions that we have to offer to better serve the HVAC-R and building construction trade pros,” Rebecca said. The expanded lineup includes condensate management products, general purpose chemicals, lighting solutions, refrigeration valves and tools and rooftop support systems. Most recently, Malco Group and Aspen Pumps Group acquired Veto Pro Pac, a premium solution for tool storage and organization.  

Despite its growth, Malco continues to anchor its strategy in its longstanding commitment to reliability and contractor ease of use. “We take feedback from the field very seriously, and we want to make sure that we’re developing products and solutions that work together to make sure that they really are solving pain points for you on the job,” Rebecca shared. “We stand behind our products, and we want to make sure that we have your back, and that we provide a solution for you.” 

That customer-first approach has been a hallmark of the company since its founding. “Malco Tools started in somebody’s garage in Minneapolis, Minnesota, based on solving a pain point,” Rebecca reflected. “We’re still innovating. We want to have things that are quality, durable and contractor tested. We give you that opportunity to have really good job site reliability, less callbacks, less broken tools and allow you to work more efficiently on the job site.” 

As Malco moves further into metal roofing and siding, Rebecca notes the expansion is a natural fit driven by materials and demand. “The materials are the throughline. We’re all dealing with sheet metal, copper, fiberglass and vinyl, so it was a natural fit to bring these solutions to market,” Rebecca stated. “There was also a demand to offer that same type of product commitment for quality, durability and innovation to the exterior and building construction trade professionals.”
