In an employee profile video, IKO’s environmental health and safety coordinator shares why he recommends working for IKO.

James Harrison didn’t plan on a career in environmental health and safety, but the opportunity arrived early in his tenure at IKO’s Hagerstown facility in Maryland. After starting as a production manager, James was asked to step into the environmental health and safety coordinator role, and he accepted the challenge.

As an environmental health and safety coordinator, James’ job is to ensure that the facility stays in compliance with city, state and national regulations including OSHA and EPA regulations. “We take safety very seriously here,” James shared in an employee profile video. The role requires consistent attention to evolving standards, but James says the work is rewarding because of the direct impact it has on employees and operations.

“The best part of my job is that I feel like I've made a difference and that our incident rates are low,” he said. He credits the whole team’s input and participation in safety practices. “We don't manufacture safety here; we safely manufacture commercial roofing supplies, and with that mindset we get a lot more buy-in from the team.”

James added that IKO’s long-term approach and commitment to its values are things he deeply admires about the company. “IKO is focused more on making sure that we are safely conducting our business and that we're not shortsighted for the immediate returns,” he stated. “Everyone really embodies the core values and tries to include them in their daily decision making, and that's refreshing. You don't really feel like you're working for a company — you feel like you’re contributing to greater success.”

When he’s not working, James enjoys spending time with his family and traveling across the United States. He only has three more states to visit!

            title='What is tapered roof insulation?'
            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By IKO Industries.

Understanding how tapered insulation supports drainage and durability is key for designing long-lasting low-slope roofs.

Every high-performing roofing system starts with a well-designed foundation, which includes durable insulation. In commercial construction, especially when working with low-slope or flat roofs, the right combination of tapered roof insulation and roof crickets can make all the difference. These elements work together to create proper roof drainage, prevent standing water and protect the structure from long-term moisture damage.

For architects, contractors and specifiers, understanding how tapered insulation functions within a low-slope roofing system is essential. That's why our experts at IKO Industries created this guide so that you can explore the fundamentals of tapered insulation, from how it improves roof drainage and energy efficiency to why it’s a key part of any durable commercial roofing design. You will also learn how roof crickets enhance water flow and extend roof lifespan in complex layouts.

This article is designed to share general insights into tapered insulation and its role in commercial roof design. It should not replace expert advice from a qualified roofing contractor, architect or building specialist when orchestrating a specific roofing project.

What is tapered insulation?

Tapered insulation has a geometric sloped profile that acts as part of a roofing system along with the deck, vapor barrier, membrane and surfacing/accessories. It is designed in such a way that it tapers off to allow for adequate water drainage to avoid damage from pooling on flat commercial rooftops. There are a variety of different styles and thicknesses of tapered insulation that can be grouped together to direct water that would otherwise pool to the proper drains.

When is tapered insulation used?

The main aim of a tapered insulation system is to deter water from pooling. Therefore, it is typically used on low-sloped roofs that do not have adequate drainage built into the structure (would otherwise not provide adequate slope) to achieve water drainage. There are many different thicknesses, slopes, profiles and sizes of tapered insulation, so the layout will largely depend on the roof design and insulation requirements.

What are the pros and cons of tapered roof insulation?

To begin with, these are some of the benefits of installing a tapered roof insulation system.

Pros

1 - Protects the roof from ponding water

Ponding or pooling water can become a significant issue with roofs over time. Commercial roofs can be specifically affected because of the HVAC and plumbing components located on the top of their buildings. These components can cause water not to flow properly and not allow excess water to be drained correctly. Standing water can be a home to insects which may spread viruses like the West Nile virus. Tapered roof insulation can be used to create unique pathways for water to drain around these components allowing for proper water flow.

2 - Contributes to energy efficiency

Any exterior surface of a building will allow for heat to escape in cold temperatures and cold air to escape during hot weather. This can be especially true for environments that experience extreme weather‌. Insulation, including tapered roof insulation, creates an added layer of protection or barrier between those elements inside and outside of a building. The benefits of this include allowing for a comfortable, even temperature and potentially less energy being needed to cool/heat a space.

3 - Great design flexibility

In comparison to other techniques, tapered insulation is better suited for complex designs. Even in the most complicated roof shapes or locations for rainwater, outlets can be easily accommodated using insulating boards that can be easily cut on-site. To make this operation even simpler, hips and valleys can be factory-cut and pre-mitered.

Cons

While there are many great benefits to gain from a tapered insulation system, there are also some challenges to consider.

1 - Can be costly in certain situations:

The primary downside of a tapered insulation system may be the cost. As a specialty product, it tends to be more expensive than commodity flat insulation panels. Tapered roof insulation panels also have an added installation cost because the panels must be installed in a specific “blueprint” sequence for them to be effective. The maximum thickness required to achieve the proper taper or slope may also impact the cost.

2 - Challenging to adapt to some roofs

Unlike other forms of roof insulation, tapered roof insulation can be challenging to adapt to some roofs that have limitations for insulation thickness. This can occur on roofs that have HVAC equipment or other roof curbs and parapets. For example, tapered roof insulation might need a thick edge of 8”, but if the roof has a curb that starts at just 4”, it will be impossible to make the tapered roof insulation fit properly.

What are the functions of tapered insulation?

As much as 40% of all building issues (Architect Magazine, “When it Leaks it Pours” Article, June 2011) are due to some form of water intrusion, the source of which is usually on the roof. Therefore, many commercial buildings employ a low-slope roofing system to reduce the chance of standing water occurring. However, a low-slope roof doesn’t always account for collecting water around walls, curbs and HVAC components. The main goal of tapered roof insulation is to help redirect pooling water from low-slope roofs that do not have an adequate slope and adding additional drains is not a solution.

Tapered insulation design considerations

When designing a tapered insulation system, there are many things to consider. If the roof has skylights, drains, expansion joints or HVAC, those elements need to be accounted for in the design. As a solution to this issue, several layouts can ‌incorporate more than one of these design considerations. Here are some of the most common terms and explanations.

1 - Shed roof design

In a simple layout, tapered insulation forms a high point, causing the water to travel down to the edges of the building into scuppers and roof drains or gutters.

2 - Two-way slope

In this layout, the roof is split into two parts, each with its own slope. The slopes can direct water towards the building’s outer edges or inwards towards a center drain.

3 - Three-way slope

This layout is typically reserved for smaller buildings attached to larger ones as it slopes to a point that lies on the side of a drained area rather than sinking to the middle.

4 - Four-way slope

The four-way slope is widely considered the most effective method for proper drainage and uses inverted slopes to eliminate the water within the drainage area. Eliminating a lot of water through a small drain in this fashion can also cause pooling. That is why it is crucial to use tapered products, like crickets, to ensure that doesn’t happen.

The impact of roof crickets

Crickets are V-shaped applications used in tapered insulation installations to divert water from valleys and rooftop curbs to low points like drains and scuppers. Roof crickets are very economical and are incorporated in the design and are typically combined with two and four-way tapered roof system design to achieve maximum drainage, even in challenging spaces. In a commercial setting, you can use crickets up against walls, HVAC, skylights and drains to prevent pooling.

Benefits of using roof crickets

There are many benefits to incorporating a roof cricket design into a tapered roof insulation plan.

1 - Roof Crickets are a cost-effective and straightforward way to help reduce the risk of leaks. Without the assistance of the roof cricket slope, water can pool around exit points like drains, causing leaks.

2 - Investing in roof crickets will help minimize or eliminate further damage down the line, potentially saving thousands on roof repair and replacement services. Not to mention the extended lifespan the roof will gain as a result.

There are many awkward areas of a roof where water can pool without the proper use of roof crickets. On commercial roofs, areas around HVAC components, walls, curbs and drains are susceptible to pooling water. Roof crickets allow contractors more flexibility in designing a tapered, low-slope roof for a commercial application with more than adequate drainage. Therefore, roof crickets are essential to any successful tapered roof insulation system.

R-value

R-value for insulation depends on the type of insulation, its thickness and its density, and is expressed as a value per inch of material thickness. An insulation with a greater R-value will be more effective at retaining conditioned air, whether it is heated in the winter or cool air in the summer. Tapered insulation will vary from a low R-value at the low point and a higher R-value at the thickest point.

How to determine a roof’s Required R-value

Location

The building’s location, its intended use and the local building and energy code requirements will determine what R-value should be specified for the building’s roof system. For example, warehouses and industrial buildings in temperate climates may need little or no insulation. Buildings used for cold storage or other specific conditions will require a lot of insulation. Higher R-values will also be required in office buildings located in extremely hot or cold climates so that worker comfort can be economically maintained throughout all seasons.

What heating and cooling infrastructure are in place?

Tapered insulation can be used to meet a building’s specific R-value needs. The areas where the tapered insulation is thicker may have a higher R-value. Where the tapered insulation is thinner (such as where the roof will be draining) the R-value will likely be lower. That is why it is important that whatever the minimum R-value requirements are, they are met by the thinnest part of the tapered insulation.

A Canadian roofing contractor teams up with IKO to deliver a custom commercial roofing system under specific requirements and tight deadlines.

When popular U.S. retailer Nordstrom opened its Calgary Chinook Centre location in Calgary, Canada, in fall 2014, the project demanded precision, speed and reliability. That’s why they turned to IKO Industries.

The high-end retailer’s new store replaced a former Sears that had been gutted down before being rebuilt to Nordstrom’s exacting specifications. Peddie Roofing & Waterproofing Ltd. of Calgary managed the roofing installation under tight timelines. “New HVAC equipment with special air handling technology was installed on the rooftop, making the roof installation a bit tricky,” said Ashley Peddie, owner and general manager of Peddie Roofing & Waterproofing Ltd. “The project was on an accelerated schedule for all trades, as Nordstrom had a firm deadline with mall owner, The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited. It also was a challenge to integrate two different roof deck systems — one concrete and one steel.”

To meet these challenges, the building owner selected an IKO Torchflex™ Heat Welded Roofing System, known for its durability and proven performance in demanding commercial settings. The system included several IKO products, such as the Torchflex TP-250-Cap Heat Welded Cap Sheet, Torchflex TP-180-FF-Base, Torchflex TF-95-SF Vapour Barrier, IKOTherm™ Tapered Insulation, IKO Millennium Adhesive, IKO Protectoboard™ and IKO Armourbond™ Flash.

The 6,968-square-meter (75,000-square-foot) roofing project started in June 2013 and was completed by October 2013. The completed project came with the IKO 10-year Diamond Shield Limited Materials Warranty, reflecting the manufacturer’s confidence in its long-term performance.

IKO North America proudly celebrated the official grand opening of its new fiberglass manufacturing facility and glass mat plant in Chester County, South Carolina. This milestone marks the completion of more than $500 million in investments that significantly advance IKO’s vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities in North America.

The two state-of-the-art facilities, located along Lancaster Highway near the city of Chester, include a fiberglass manufacturing plant and a 325,000-square-foot glass mat production facility that utilizes output from the adjacent fiberglass plant. Glass mat is a critical component in asphalt shingle production, and the new facility will support IKO’s growing network of shingle manufacturing operations across North America, enhancing supply chain efficiency, quality control and long-term reliability.

“This grand opening represents a major milestone for IKO and a proud moment for our entire organization,” said David Koschitzky, CEO of IKO North America. “This year is particularly special as we celebrate 75 years of IKO. As a family-owned and operated business, we are especially proud to invest in communities like Chester County and to create meaningful, long-term opportunities.”

The grand opening ceremony brought together IKO leadership, state and local officials, community partners and employees to commemorate the project’s completion and celebrate its economic impact on the region. Together, the facilities are expected to create nearly 200 full-time jobs, contributing to sustained economic growth and workforce development in Chester County. Attending the event were notable officials and dignitaries, including Pamela Evette, lieutenant governor of South Carolina; Courtney Jackson, constituent services representative for U.S. Senator Tim Scott; Freddie Gault, senior field representative for the Office of U.S. Representative Ralph Norman; Senior Trade Commissioner Michael Mancini, representing Rosaline Kwan, the Government of Canada’s consul general to the Southeast United States; Randy Ligon, member of the South Carolina House of Representatives; and Robert Long, director of Chester County economic development.

Attendees had the opportunity to tour both facilities and experience the manufacturing process firsthand, gaining a live, end-to-end view of fiberglass and glass mat production.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Jenny Yu.

IKO is honoring its rich history while investing in plant expansion, broader product selection and proven performance.

At the close of day two at the 2026 International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas, Jack Gottesman, marketing and brand director of IKO North America, shared some exciting milestones and plans with Dani Sheehan of The Coffee Shops™. Standing inside the company’s extensive booth, Jack reflected on both the energy of the show and what’s next for IKO.

“What we are here to do is celebrate. 2026 marks our 75th year, and it’s a moment for us to pause and reflect,” Jack said. “We count our blessings as a family owned and operated roofing manufacturer around the world. There’s a lot to be proud of, and there’s a lot that we’re really looking forward to as well.”

Among the plans that the company is looking forward to are two new manufacturing plants opening a week after the convention in South Carolina, followed by a new shingle plant in Jacksonville, Florida, in April.

“It's really performance, right? Performance is what people expect from us. It's what our distributors expect. It's what our contractors expect. And that's what we're here to deliver on,” Jack expressed. “Performance and products, performance and services, and a smile means performance, too.”

On the product side, Jack highlighted one of IKO’s newest shingle colors, Old Style Weatherwood, available in the Dynasty and Nordic lines. Both feature the company’s wide nailing zone designed to support installation accuracy along with impact resistance and high wind ratings. For a thorough look at the different types of colors, Jack also pointed to 30-second drone videos for every shingle color, showing real roofs under real-world conditions to help homeowners visualize their choices.

Furthermore, IKO is expanding its cool roofing offerings with new colors including Harbor Black and Shoreline Gray. “Cool colors have the reflective roofing technology that was designed to fit the demands of regulations in California and increasingly other areas of the world,” Jack said. “It's what the homeowners are looking for. We want to make sure that we are delivering as many options as possible, and that breadth of color selection is a really good thing.”

Finally, Jack explained how IKO is pushing toward growth in the metal roofing sphere in 2026. With the acquisitions of DECRA Metal Roofing and Tilcor, IKO is integrating stone-coated metal solutions into its broader residential strategy. “When it comes to metals, what makes us unique is having different color options in a variety of different profiles that homeowners are looking for,” Jack said.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Industry pros share practical strategies on marketing, crafting the perfect sales pitch and scaling up your business with roofing contractors in two fully booked Canadian events.

IKO’s 2026 Profit Power series hit the ground running with two full-house roofing contractor workshops in Halifax and Winnipeg, leaving attendees energized, inspired and armed with actionable strategies to grow their roofing businesses.

“Profit Power is about giving contractors insights they can take straight back to their businesses,” said Jack Gottesman, marketing and brand director at IKO North America. “The turnout, energy and engagement at Halifax and Winnipeg were incredible. If you weren’t there, you missed an experience that went far beyond a typical workshop.

The Halifax workshop, the first-ever Profit Power roofing contractor workshop in the Atlantic Provinces, brought together contractors at the scenic Marriott Harbourfront Hotel overlooking the Halifax Harbour. Industry leaders shared hard-earned insights; attendees were seen scribbling notes, soaking up personal lessons from Dmitry Lipinskiy of Roofing Insights, who shared his journey building a successful roofing business and practical tips for leveling up social media in today’s digital era. Other Halifax speakers included Wade Brown from JobNimbus and Mitch Beaulieu of Advanced Level Roofing, offering guidance on scaling businesses. Mitch has been an IKO ROOFPRO Craftsman Premier contractor since 2020 and has grown his business from Calgary in 2016 to five cities today. After the workshops, contractors wrapped up the day with axe throwing and networking at the happy hour.

In Winnipeg, the energy was just as high, with another full house. Sessions included Wade Brown on peak performance, Jason Ashman from Scorpion on digital marketing and Dimitry’s signature business-building advice. The event also featured Steve Bunin, an executive communication coach and former sportscaster for ESPN, CBS, FOX and more, who taught attendees the art of storytelling. Through interactive exercises, roofers practiced delivering winning pitches and communicating their value, gaining practical tips they could use immediately. The day ended on a high note with a happy hour and a Winnipeg Jets game at Canada Life Centre, creating lasting memories as the Jets secured a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Attendees also learned about IKO’s manufacturing excellence, vertical integration and the ROOFPRO contractor loyalty program, demonstrating how IKO supports contractors not only with products but also with collaborations, growth and opportunities to thrive.

Scorpion and JobNimbus are among the many strategic partnerships available to all ROOFPRO members, giving contractors access to tools designed to help them work smarter and sell more.

In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips™, Megan Ellsworth sat down with Becca Haggard, owner of That Girl Roofing, to discuss her journey into roofing and why she partners exclusively with IKO Industries.

Becca didn’t plan on becoming a roofer. When her brother started a roofing company, all it took was one climb atop a roof, and she was stuck.

“I put my ladder up and climbed on my first roof with him, and I just remember having this moment thinking, ‘My gosh. This is it. I love everything about this,’” Becca recounted. This love continued to blossom. “I love that sense of freedom up there. I loved learning the ins and outs of roofing.”

With a background in sales and a natural penchant for fixing things, Becca found her calling. After a year and a half working with her brother, Becca was ready to create her own company: That Girl Roofing. In a crowded market, embracing what made her unique helped her company stand out. “It got a lot of traction, I think, because people saw the passion I had for it. And it's not just a job for me,” Becca shared. “I do think I'm a little different in the way that I've built relationships with my team and my crew members.”

Another way Becca separates herself from the competition is through her service-driven approach. Rather than pushing urgency and sales at all costs, Becca prioritizes transparency and trust in customer relationships. “The mindset is not finding the quickest, easiest way to make money,” Becca stated. “I have to make money, and you have to make money, but at end of the day, I really want to serve my client. I want to provide not just a roof, but the knowledge that I am going to give you what you need.”

To best fill the needs of her customers, Becca needed to find materials that she could stand by. After testing several products, she chose to partner with IKO. “Dynasty is my go-to,” Becca said. “It’s durable, and it’s going to allow me to do the best job and sleep well at night knowing I gave my client the best product that I believe is out there.”
